The benefits of Licorice has been known to Indians since thousand years. The Sanskrit term for Licorice is Yashtimadhu.It is a common Ayurvedic herb. This herb is been chewed in many so such household where someone's have voice problems.

For Voice improvement

Very small licorice sticks are taken with a length of 2 – 3 cm. They are chewed and their juice is swallowed to relieve us from hoarseness in our voice.

Singers also improve their voice by using this drink

Half teaspoon of the juice is taken along with honey or ghee

For High Blood Pressure

A dose of 30 grams a day, for more weeks, can cause high blood pressure.

The daily dose must not be more than 3 grams a day.

Anti-Aging

An intake of 2 grams of the powder with warm milk will be an excellent rejuvenator or a brain tonic for us.

Side effects of Yashtimadhu

1. Must not be had by pregnant women as it may cause complications
2. People with high BP and low levels of the mineral potassium must not have it
3. The excess dose of Liquorice leads to Vomiting, Nausea, or an increase in Blood pressure.
4. It is very important for one to take the medicine under proper supervision

Contra Indications

1. Cardiac glycosides Licorice, on one hand, may potentiate toxicity.

2. On Insulin: Licorice can have a synergistic effect causing problems like hypokalemia

3. As an Anticoagulant: Licorice increases our metabolism and clears warfarin

4. (MAO-I)MAO-inhibitors: Licorice potentiates activity on MAO-Is

5. (P-GP)P-Glycoprotein substrates: Licorice inhibits P-GP, which results in and increased intracellular concentration, specifically of that chemo agent daunorubicin(It is a substrate of P-GP)

6. Cortisol acetate: Licorice increases the cortisol availability of tissues during a time which follows oral administration of Cortisone acetate

7. (P450)Cytochrome substrates: Glycyrrhizin is a major ingredient of the licorice, it induces CYP2D6 and CYP3A. This can affect our intracellular . concentration of certain drugs which has been metabolized by the enzyme.

8. Cyclosporine: Licorice is greatly reduced on the oral bioavailability of cyclosporine This activates CYP3A4 and P-GP
